UPDATE SEPT. 30TH, 2007

THE VAL TURTON-CARL OSBORNE FOUNDATION

Founders: Theo Coqueran, Irwin Frank, Victor Hayes, Ken Davis, Fred Thornhill Patron: Her Excellency Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards First Lady of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

The Val Turton-Carl Osborne Foundation was founded by Theo Coqueran, Irwin Frank, Victor Hayes, Ken Davis, Fred Thornhill in the year 2001.   The key person in the initiation of the Foundation was Irwin Frank.  Since then, the Foundation has made tremendous strides.

A new fundraising event:

In addition to the yearly intercollegiate football match, the Foundation held the first annual Val Turton-Carl Osborne golf tournament in May 2007.  This was hosted by Petrotrin Oil Company at the Pointe a Pierre golf club.  The success of this event can be attributed to the leadership of two stalwarts of the Foundation, Guy Ottley and Fred Thornhill.  Ron Ameerali was also of pivotal assistance in launch of this initial tournament.  Her Excellency, Dr Jean Ramjohn Richards was present to distribute the prizes at the end of the game.  It should be noted that Her Excellency is a graduate from Naparima College and has been very gracious to accept the role of patron to this Foundation.

Trust fund increasing:

Financially, we have more than $100,000.  in the bank as attested in the audited financial statements of the Foundation dated January 5th, 2007 and signed by Naiyada Henry, ACCA.

Increase in the number of beneficiaries:

Over the past 5 years, the Foundation has now awarded over $65,000. in bursaries to 13 students.  The first recipients were male students from Presentation and Naparima colleges.  This past year, the Foundation decided to include a female graduating student, Tamar Watson, from Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive in its beneficiaries.  Other recipients for 2006 were Renato Ramlochan of Naparima College and Dario Hector of Presentation College .  All three students received $5000 to further their education.

Keeping friends of the Foundation informed:

The Web site that was set up a few years ago is being continually updated and has proven a good way to inform our friends and supporters of our work.

Financial Statement 2006

This is the most recent update of the Turton-Osborne Foundation financial statement for 2006 as done by Naiyada Henry ACCA, January 5th, 2007

Review 2006

A number of significant things took place in 2006.

It was our 5th anniversary of the Foundation’s existence. Every one would be pleased to know that we have over $100,000 in investments and cash in the bank. In addition we have given out over $65,000 to students of Presentation and Naparima.

A young lady Tamar Watson a graduate from Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive was the first female to benefit from the Foundation’s efforts to encourage our footballers to seek tertiary education. She received $5000 at the awards ceremony at President’s House this past summer.

Another first for the Foundation was holding an open general meeting in February at Naparima College to give the public an account of our stewardship and outline the vision of the Foundation.

Finally the major fund raiser was initiated by the executive which is a Turton/Osborne Golf Tournament hosted by Petrotrin which will take place on Sunday May 6th, at Petrotrin Golf Club, Point-A-Pierre.

Naps Looking for Hat-Trick
by Mervyn Stewart from Express Oct. 14, 2004

"Naps" won the first Turton-Osborne Memorial clash in 2002 and followed it up with a 4-0 shutout of "Pres" last year. And come saturday, they will be looking to register the first three-peat.

Naparima College will be looking to make it a hat-trick of victories when they face Presentation College in the 3rd annual Turton-Osborne Memorial at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella on Saturday.

"Naps" won the first Turton-Osborne Memorial clash in 2002 and followed it up with a 4-0 shutout of "Pres" last year. And come saturday, they will be looking to register the first three-peat.

The idea to host an annual match in memory of two of San Fernando's outstanding footballers was born in 2000 and the then committee, later to be known as the Turton-Osborne Foundation, agreed on Val Turton, former national player and Presentation College great, and Carl Osborne, the creative and outstanding Naparima College centre half.

Osborne created history in 1953 when he became the first Naparima College captain to lead his team to victory over "Pres" in an InterCol game.

Twenty years later (1973) he had the distinction of guiding "Naps" to their first National InterCol Championship as a coach.

He repeated the feat in 1976 and later went on to also coach Presntation College to InterCol glory.

Turton, on the other hand, was the last of five brothers, who all represented Presentation College.

Nicknamed "Pinhead Duffy" by one of his sisters because of his petite frame, Val had a much more difficult time of making Presentation's team than his other brothers, but when he finally did, in 1952, he played with great distinction.

He helped Presentation maintain their hold on the JO Cotridge Cup to keep alive a tradition that Presentation College never lost an InterCol to Naparima as long as there was a Turton on the team.

In light of the outstanding achievements of these two southern "sons of the soil", the Foundation decided to honour their contributions with an annual football clash between the two colleges.

The foundation also agreed that in addition to the annual memorila game, they would promote the following three key goals.

1. The awarding of a $5000 bursary each year to a deserving student from each college to further his educational aspirations,

2. Providing financial support for the football programmes of both Naparima amd Presentation College, and,

3. Encouraging the development of female football in the southern region.

With regards to the development of female football, a match featuring two teams from schools in the southern region was added to the programmme thus creating an exciting double-header.

This year's female game will see Fyzabad Composite coming up against Moruga Composite with the winners collecting the Dr. Jean Ramjohn-Richards Challenge Trophy, which was donated by the First Lady.

The Foundation has already awarded $20,000 over the past two years with 2002 awardees, Shay Sutherland of Presentation and Lyndon Pompey of Naparima. each receiving $5000 to help further their education at a university of their choice.

The 2003 awardees were Ancil Farrier and Davon Jones of Naparima and Presentation, respectively.

Farrier has already been accepted at the University of West Connecticut, USA on a football scholarship.

Saturday's double-header is scheduled to kick off at 2 P.M. with the Fyzabad/Moruga female match-up to be followed by the feature game some two hours later.

And Presentation, who usually dominated matches between the old rivals, during the playing days of Turton and Osborne, will be seeking to restore some pride by denying Naparima an historic hat-tricks of wins.

Naps retain Turton/Osborne trophy
by Mervyn Stewart from Express Sept. 4, 2003

Naparima College sounded an ominous warning to all comers for the 2003 Secondary Schools Football league season when they scored two goals on either side of the half time to beat Presentation College 4-0 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, on Tuesday to retain the Turton/Osborne trophy.

Prime Minister, Patrick Manning took the first kick to get the ball rolling and twenty four minutes into the game, Naparima who was having the better of the exchanges, opened the scoring when striker Ateba Forbe, capitalised on a defensive blunder to easily chip an advancing Mark Placide in goal for Presentation.

Ten minutes later (34th) "Naps" went further ahead as keeper Placide failed to cleanly collect a feeble left-footed shot from Adisa Connel, which eluded his grasp and rolled over the goal-line.

This lapse in judgement by Placide meant that Naparima now held a comfortable advantage which they took with them into the locker-room at the half time interval.

Fourteen minutes after the resumption (59th), "Naps" made it 3-0 when midfielder Kezi Lara delivered a pinpoint pass down the left flank to Forbe who squared it back for Ancil Farrier to drive home from close range.

The goal of the match however. came in the 70th minute through "Man of the Match" Lara. who picked up the ball in midfield, danced his way past a defender and blasted a 25-metre rocket that gave Placide absolutely no chance as it sizzled past him and settled in back of the net.

"Pres" had a few good chances early on but their finishing let them down tremendously and after the first half, they never looked like getting on the scoresheet.

Naparima were winning the trophy for the second year in succession as they also whipped "Pres" in last year inaugural staging of the contest.

This annual contest was conceptualised by the Turton?Osborne Foundation as a means of honouring Carl Osborne, a former outstanding centre forward of Nparima, and Valentine Turton, a Presentation College and national player.

The Turton/Osborne Project serves to mesh academics with football, as coming out of the game bursaries amounting to $10,000 will be awarded to meritous students; one from "Naps" and "Pres" apiece. They have also thrown their support behind girls' football in high schools.

At the end of the game, Naparima were adjudged winners of the best rhythm section, while Lara picked up $400 for his Man-of-the-Match efforts.

Dennis Turton, one of Val's brothers and Noreen Osborne, wife of Carl, handed out the trophy to winning captain Lyndel Pompey.

The ladies match-up between Point Fortin Senior Comprehensive and Moruga Composite failed to come off as scheduled.

TEAMS:

Naparima: Lyndel Pompey, Dezi Lara, Cerron Millette, Kevin De Verteiul, Brenton De Leon, Kezi Lara, Renato Ramlochan, Adisa Connell, Javed Mohammed, Ancil Farrier, and Ateba Forde. Pompey and Sutherland pocket $5,000 Turton-Osborn bursaries

Southern schoolboy footballers Lyndon Pompey and Shay Sutherland on Friday received $5,000 bursaries each from the Turton-Osborne Foundation.

The ceremony was held at the San Fernando City Corporation, under the patronage of Mayor Gerard Ferrerio.

The students from Naparima boys and Presentation College (San Fernando) were awarded bursaries as part of the foundation’s drive to assist young footballers in
their academic development.

The Foundation was formed over one year ago in honour of Presentation College’s Val Turton and Naparima College’s Carl Osborne, both of whom were footballers
at the respective schools in the early 60’s

Presentation college principal Simon Rostant said the initiative taken by the Turton-Osborne Foundation was a great effort to recognise excellence in the students.
He said he appreciated the effort to pay attention to the good things the students are doing.

Mayor Ferreria said he too was pleased by the effort the Foundation is making in building the community and young sportsmen.

On September 2, at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, the Foundation will be hosting a football match between Naparima Boys and Presentation College, in honour of Turton and Osborne.

The Turton/Osborne Project Friday October 11, 2002
by Alwyn de Coteau

Sando football greats remembered

The memory of two of San Fernando football greats took the form of a project when it was launched recently at the San Fernando City Hall before a large gathering.

This project was initiated by a group of Dan Fernandians who played football at Skinner Park, San Fernando during the last decade.

They have embarked on this project to honour the memory of Val Turton and Carl Osborne, for the contribution they made to football in TnT in general, and South Trinidad in particular.

Most of the members of the project committee attended either Naparima

College, or Presentation College, San Fernando.

Val Turton was the last child of the Turton family, a prominent San Fernando sporting family whose members have distinguished themselves at the national level in sports, primarily athletics and football.

He represented Presentation College, San Fernando, SAFA South Trinidad, Maple and the national football team.

Carl Osborne was originally from Forest Reserve, but moved to San Fernando.

He represented Naparima College, Angels Sport Club, Forest Reserve, Juniors, and SAFA.

Osborne was the first Naparima captain to lead his team to an intercol victory over Presentation College.

After his playing days were over, he became a successful coach, taking first, Naparima, and later Presentation, to intercol championships.

To honour the memory of Turton and Osborne, the committee will be re-introducing an annual intercol clash between Naparima and Presentation Colleges.

Irwin Frank, Theo Coqueran, Victor Hayes, and Ken Davis, who are from San Fernando but now reside in Canada, have donated the trophy which will be called the Val Turton/Carl Osborne, Memorial Trophy.

The committee intend to award a bursary annually to one player from each school.

They are grateful to Trinidad and Tobago Unit Trust Corporation for its support of the bursaries.

According to Adrian Chandler, the recipients of the awards must exhibit good football skills combined with high academic achievement.

He told the TnT Mirror that a committee was set up comprising the likes of Ken Davis, Edmond Turton, Roy Regis, Roy Jagroopsingh and Leslie Hoyte, who will decide on the winners of the awards.

Chandler pointed out that the winners of this award will be announced later this year.

He said their plans have been discussed with the wives of the two former players, the principals and sport masters of the two colleges, Naparima Old Boys’ Association, Presentation Alumni, the Mayor of San Fernando, the Secondary Schools Football League and Junior Sports Club.

They have all given their support of the project.

Chandler said his committee is in the process of establishing the Turton/Osborne Foundation, which will assume responsibility for the event.

He stressed that the Foundation will organize the matches and raise the funds necessary to continue awarding the bursaries.

He said the Foundation will also raise funds to support the sports programme of the two schools.

Representatives from the executive of the Naparima Old Boys Association, Presentation Alumni, and Junior Sports Club will administer the Foundation.

Some of the people in the project include – from TnT: Adrian Chandler, Roy Regis, Dennis Turton, and Guy Ottley.
